I was pleased to hear that Kumar and NK Cigar Lounge had finally recieved the long awaited Padrón 85th! Every September, Padrón Cigars Inc. releases a new version of its Padrón Family Blend cigar to commemorate another year of the company’s existence The 85th Anniversary was made to commemorate the 85th birthday of Jose Orlando Padron. It began with the Family Reserve No. 44, made for the company’s 44th year, and last year commenced with the release of the No. 46.
The Padróns are tobacco hoarders, keeping stocks of tobaccos for years. They are made with some of the oldest in the considerable Padrón inventories and have done very well over the years. The Padrón Family Reserve No. 45 was named Cigar Aficionado’s Cigar of the Year for 2009, with a score of 95 points, classic on the C.A 100 point scale. The cigars are made in Nicaragua by two bunchers and two rollers, who are still making cigars. The cigar, initially expected to launch last month, was held up because of the packaging.
Jorge Padrón, president of Padrón Cigars Inc. in Miami, stressed there would be “limited” amounts of the cigar, and that they would be shipping slowly, in batches. The cigars are pressed parejos measuring 5 1/4 inches by 50 ring gauge
After lighting up I was very surprised at how much spice the cigar had and I immediatly felt it in the back of my throat. Loads of coffee also acompanied the full body and considerably rich cigar! This was stronger than any Padrón that I have smoked and not eating before I lit up was probably the reason most of what I was getting was intensified. I got something to drink, and am happy to report that after the first 1/2 inch it slowed down abit into a complex well balanced cigar. The coffee that I was getting at the beginning slowed but nuances of it conitinued throughout along with dark chocolate and cedar. After I removed the band the cigar picked up again and evolved into a bouquet of spicy but not overbearing pepper, With a touch of dark chocolate and sweet cedar all the way to the nub and burned perfect the entire way through. This was everything I had come to expect from an anniversario Padrón and eagerly look forward to next years release, IMO should be in Cigar Aficionado’s top 5 if not higher.
